Stonefire Art Studio
was full of surprises. One day Maxine would assign you to paint a brick outside and the next
day you were inside moving a bunch of junk around. Most of the time while
working outside of the building, the sun would be beaming down upon your head.
When there was work to be done inside, it was usually in the back room with all
the dusty stuff that has been sitting in there.
I preferred being outside in
the fresh air painting the walls just relaxed. While painting, the cars of my
high school friends sped by just getting out of school. I continue to paint
even when the paint would be dripping down my arm as I remained focused on my
unique artwork brick. The scent of paint filled the air as the wind blew around
me. I chewed my minty gum keeping me on task. My hand would start to cramp up
after consistently painting without stopping. That was my favorite day
volunteering for my BCC class at Stonefire.
Volunteering at Stonefire in Titusville with all the art projects presented and all of the different people coming together to work hard on something that will become a success can relate to cheerleading. When you volunteer at Stonefire, you are working together with others in order to make a work of art. In cheerleading one must work with others to form a “work of art as well.”
Both volunteering at Stonefire Art Studio and cheerleading take a lot of work with patterns and forming an image to appeal the public's eye. Someone would think that they are completely different hobbies but when one participates hands on in both hobbies, one could see how the two relate. In order to be a cheerleader, one must be somewhat creative and artistic. Cheerleaders work hard at practices so that when the big game comes around, they have something to present to the audience. Volunteers at Stonefire work so when an Art Show comes around, they have something to present to an audience.
Volunteering can increase determination in a person. Determination does not just come to a person at any time. Determination has to build in a person over time. When someone really wants something that takes time and energy, such as education or reaching a goal, they are determined to get what they want. When someone gives up on something they want to do but do not want to try or work hard, this results because of no determination to do it.
Having a job to earn money is something someone is determined to do; a person is determined to earn money. If someone wants to be successful in almost anything in life, a sport, school, or a job, determination is an important quality to keep someone going and to not give up. Determination comes from other important qualities: confidence, perseverance, attentiveness, and purpose. Volunteering can sometimes be very boring and time consuming, but with the determination towards education and making the community better, volunteering can be rewarding.
Change of plans turned on us when Maxine, owner and volunteer director, assigned to paint the brick wall outside. Painting didn’t start off that fun due to the wind and a little sprinkle of rain outside. We got ice cream from Space Coast Ice Cream shop down the street and got working. It started off with the wind blowing the wet black paint around and ended with us painting more than just the walls. Little did we know that it would turn into a paint war. Another day of volunteering turned into a fun Sunday morning.
